Common questions regarding Apple / Mac service at Progressive Tech

Q: Is Progressive Tech an authorized Apple service provider?

A: Progressive Tech is not an authorized Apple service provider. Our Apple Mac service technicians are Apple trained and have over 15 years of Mac repair and support experience. Most of the time we can fix your Mac faster and for considerably less money than an authorized provider.

We at Progressive Tech chose not to pursue certification from Apple for a variety of reasons. Our decision was based namely on geographic factors; with both Apple's corporate retail store at U-village and the Seattle Mac store just 10 minutes driving time from our shop. When we opened our doors, there was a real need for a reputable and independent Apple Mac service in Seattle. Since opening, we have built a solid, trusted reputation as the place to take your out of warranty Mac.

Q: What will happen when I bring my Mac in for service?

A: We'll start by taking some time to talk with you about the problems you are experiencing with your computer. After check-in is complete, we will test your laptop or desktop and evaluate the health of the hardware components. This is an important step, as we can establish whether hardware or software is the cause of your issues. After the diagnosis is complete, we will contact you with the details, clearly outline your options, and recommend a course of action. Progressive Tech will never suggest investing more into a machine than it is worth.

Q: What will be done as part of the diagnosis of my computer?

A: Our basic diagnosis includes thorough external testing and evaluation of your machine. Progressive Tech will not dismantle a computer as part of a basic diagnostic. Fortunately, most computers do not need to be dismantled to complete a diagnosis. If a problem requires dismantling of your machine, hourly labor charges will apply in addition to our standard diagnosis charges.

Q: I already know what's wrong, why do I need a diagnostic?

A: A thorough diagnostic by trained professionals is the key to accurate and cost effective repair. We have encountered numerous situations where clients have asked us to perform work based on a diagnostic by another service center or by clients themselves. While the diagnosis may be accurate, there may be additional issues or complications that affect the viability of a repair. By performing a diagnosis of the entire machine, we can provide an effective warranty, which is limited to the issues we have actually worked on.

Q: Will I lose my data during service?

A: Rest assured that Progressive Tech will do everything possible to protect, recover and backup your important files. Some services performed do require that data be backup or recovered. These are often due to hard drive failure or the need to reinstall the computers operating system. In these cases we will clearly communicate the details and risks associated with the service.

Q: Will I lose the programs that are installed on my computer?

A: Software applications are integrated into the operating system. In cases where a hard drive failure has occurred or operating system reinstallation is necessary, all programs will be lost and will have to be reinstalled, either from disc or by downloading the application(s) from the Internet. As part of our normal service, Progressive Tech will install your core operating system and ensure that the computer is fully functional. We are not able to back up software applications; we are only able to save files and data created by those programs. Unless directed to do so, we will not install any software above and beyond the basic operating system. Mac OS X does not include Microsoft Office.
